The motorists leaving town tonight could have easily thought there was a night race on the Hutt Rd, with 12 well groomed riders passing cars – and that’s in the head wind!
Once out of the traffic and at the start of Korokoro hill, Paul put in an attack that set the pace for the rest of the climb – with the climb being long only 4 riders were left at the half way point, with Johno taking summit honours. Everyone waited for the summit picture (above) – being so dark sorry for those who didn’t get in the pic as it was a little difficult seeing through my camera in the pitch black darkness (when the heart rate is still maxed out!). Paul & Elliot showing off their incredibly small Blackburn “flea” lights (they are very bright!!). Sepp was doing his unders and overs (85% effort with 30 second 100% efforts, and 10 second rest), while the rest of us were doing overs and unders! But more on Sepp’s techniques in another blog.
The ride back through Petone after the descent was a little manic with so many crossing sprints, but once we were back on the Hutt Rd the pace settled down to a nice 45-50km/hr (no tail wind!) – Johno pushed up the pace a little and then the attacks started. He managed to recover in time to take out the final sprint from Daniel who put in the final attack (I manage to get on his wheel for a tow over the line). The round trip was about 1:15, not bad for 40km at night incl a big climb! – After all it’s just a recovery ride after the Sunday world champs!!
